Project Y!MBY Connect Day 2008

GREATER HOLLYWOOD TO HOST THE HOMELESS

Project Y!MBY (Yes! In My Backyard) is mobilizing neighborhoods with targeted outreach to provide immediate housing and services for the homeless population of Hollywood and West Hollywood. The 3rd Annual Hollywood event will be launched Thursday, June 26th (7 a.m.- 1 p.m.) at the Music Box Fonda Theatre located at 6126 Hollywood Blvd., Hollywood, CA, 90028.

Like a social service “expo”, YIMBY Connect Day will gather over 60 local public and private service providers and over 300 volunteers for one day of intensive outreach and engagement services. People who are homeless will find everything from haircuts and foot care to medical examinations, counseling and housing services from across the greater Hollywood area.

"We need the entire Hollywood community to get behind Project Y!MBY Connect Day and make it a success," said L.A. City Council President Eric Garcetti. "This is a powerful opportunity for all of us to demonstrate our collective commitment, get involved, take action and be a part of ending homelessness."

Local government officials will kick-off the event, announcing a new strategy to develop and implement a 10 year plan to end homelessness in Hollywood, followed by a volunteer pep rally. Visit www.epath.org/yimby for a complete list of Project Y!MBY sponsors and participating entities.

Project Y!MBY Connect Day is a component of Project Y!MBY, a grass-roots community mobilization initiative geared towards helping communities develop coordinated responses to end homelessness. Project Y!MBY generates positive mobilization for national and regional strategies towards ending homelessness, and transforming those strategies into activities on a neighborhood level.

Community Response – Yes! In My Backyard.

March 2008

In our ongoing efforts to end homelessness, the greatest advantage comes with strategic coordinated efforts involving all sectors of a community.

In Hollywood, Project Y!MBY, (Yes! In My Backyard) has mobilized stakeholders to create "a coalition of the willing", determined to confront critical issues and work together to end homelessness in the Hollywood community.

Hollywood Snapshot! Over 70 volunteers participated in a point-in-time snapshot of unsheltered homeless persons in the Hollywood region. In partnership with The Hollywood Entertainment District, LAHSA, Council District 13 and 4, The Hollywood Homeless Youth Partnership, The County of Los Angeles, as well as many other Hollywood stakeholders, Project Y!MBY brought together over 70 volunteers in a matter of two weeks.  A testament to the dedication and commitment of the Hollywood community towards addressing the issue of homelessness.

Data collected during the event (to be released mid April) will provide a snapshot of how many homeless individuals are sleeping on the streets in the Hollywood region.
