VOLUNTEER WITH PATHFINDERSReceptionistVolunteers who like interacting with people and providing customer service are needed to fill a receptionist position in the PATHFinders Job Center. Duties include signing people in and out, checking messages on the community voicemail system and posting them, providing general information and customer service, providing computer assistance, updating job boards, grading TABE tests and performing other clerical duties as necessary. Skills needed: Familiarity with computers and good typing skills. Friendly demeanor and good people skills. A sensitivity towards homeless people. Day/Time: A critical need exists between 8am-11:30am, M-Th. However, assistance will be welcomed any time M-F, from 8am-4pm. A regular commitment would be appreciated. Resume WriterVolunteers who like interacting with people and have good writing skills are needed to provide resume assistance to homeless and low-income clients. As a resume writer for PATH, you will meet with clients one-on-one to discuss their work history, troubleshoot challenging issues, provide tips for filling out applications and draft resumes, cover letters and thank you letters. Skills needed: Hiring experience, good people skills and familiarity with computers. Patience, discernment, empathy and sensitivity are a must. Day/Time: Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. If you are interested in becoming a resume writer, but are not available at this time, feel free to contact us and we can try to plug you in at a different time. Internet Workshop FacilitatorVolunteers who are Internet savvy and like teaching are needed to facilitate the Internet Workshop, which introduces basic computer and Internet concepts to participants. As an Internet Workshop facilitator, you will teach people the importance of computer in today’s market, help them to use websites to job search and show them how to open and use an email account. Skills needed: Computer and Internet savvy, enjoys working with people and has a lot of patience. Day/Time: Tuesday mornings at 9 a.m. Interview Workshop FacilitatorProfessional volunteers who are interested in helping disadvantaged individuals achieve success are needed to help facilitate the Interview Workshop, an interactive group workshop. As the Interview Workshop Facilitator, you will familiarize participants with interview questions, coach them on responding, teach them how to dress appropriately and clue them in to their non-verbal cues. Skills needed: Hiring experience, ability to facilitate group discussion and interest in helping people. Day/Time: Wednesday mornings @ 9 a.m. Job DeveloperVolunteers who are interested in connecting the corporate community with homeless and low-income job seekers are needed to help with job development. Duties will include doing presentations for companies, attending job fairs as a PATH representative, following-up with employer contacts and researching labor trends in Los Angeles. Skills needed: Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to network, professional demeanor and an interest in helping people. Day/Time: Generally, during regular business hours, but can be flexible. Alumni OutreachVolunteers with strong communication skills and a detail orientation are needed to reach out to past graduates to follow-up with their progress. Duties include calling employers and graduates to offer support and find out how they are doing, assisting staff to plan Alumni events and developing an efficient tracking system. Skills needed: The ability to see the importance of retention, detail orientation, strong communication skills, professional demeanor. Day/Time: Generally, during regular business hours, but can be flexible Career Panel ParticipantVolunteers from various industries are needed to take part in career panels for our participants. As a panelist, you will share your experience and knowledge about your industry and provide tips and resources for clients who are interested in pursuing that industry. Skills needed: 5 years in the industry you would like to discuss; individuals who have advanced within their industries are preferred Day/Time: TBD Housekeeping/MaintenanceA volunteer with an exceptionally serving heart is needed to help clean the computers and ensure that the Job Center is clean and user-friendly. Duties will include cleaning keyboards, screens, surfaces and other light housekeeping tasks. Skills needed: A desire to serve! Day/Time: Anytime Literacy VolunteerVolunteers are needed to tutor clients on-site at the Regional Homeless Center. Tutors work one-on-one with students to help them learn how to read and learn basic skills. Skills needed: Good reading and teaching skills, patience, enjoys working with individuals. Day/Time: Tutors will have to attend a one-time Los Angeles Public Library training class that is from 10-5pm on Saturdays. After a tutor is assigned a student, they are committed to meeting with that individual twice a week for six months. ***Also see Internship Opportunites: GED Instructor, Employment
