GED Instructor

Background
The GED is a standardized test that measures mastery of high school concepts and is considered the equivalent of a high school diploma. It is an important foundation for any career because it opens up a whole range of employment opportunities that would not be available otherwise. The GED can be a very intimidating test, which is why PATH considers GED preparation classes to be one of the most valuable tools we can offer our clients. These classes will enable homeless and low-income people to escape welfare and minimum wage jobs and obtain careers.

Summary
The GED Instructor is charged with facilitating a GED preparation class for adults. The class is self-paced and computer-directed, but the instructor will monitor attendance and progress, answer individual questions, provides supplemental materials as needed and offer GED and post-GED resources.

Responsibilities
• Provide individual tutoring assistance
• Create class schedules for students
• Monitor attendance and progress
• Develop individual class plans for each student
• Develop supplemental materials
• Identify GED and post-GED resources for students
• Become familiar with GED software

Qualifications
• Senior level college student (junior or senior) or higher
• 3.5 GPA or higher
• Tutoring experience is helpful
• An interest in helping others
• Empathy, patience and compassion

Availability/Hours
• Actual classes are M-F, 1-3pm
• Intern schedules will be M-F, 1-4pm
• Some flexibility with the hours

Minimum commitment
• 6 hours per week (2 days)
• 2 months
