MEET THE JOHNSONS

Johnsons

Adam's mom Sam grew up in an abusive home, and later married an abusive man. When the violence spread to include her kids, she knew they had to get out. They spent the summer blending in on the beach during day and sleeping in their car at night. When summer ended, and they still didn't have a place to stay, Sam realized they needed outside help. She called 211, was connected with PATH Beyond Shelter, and her family began their journey toward a safe, permanent home.

Sam, Grace, Daniel, and Adam are creating a book about their experiences. Keep an eye out for more details soon!

Sam

Sam

"When we were homeless, I learned so much more about the kids. We would just sit and talk, play games, laugh, and joke, and do things that normal families do on the weekend or when they are off work. We formed a stronger bond."

Grace

Grace - 12

"Even though we were unhappy being homeless, we were happy to have each other. Hard work gave us a home. Love and patience kept us together in it."

Daniel

Daniel - 11

"While we were homeless, we got to know a lot of homeless kids, and I remember how it felt to be friends with them. Everyone needs friends."

Adam

Adam - 9

"Being homeless taught me not to judge people who are homeless, but to help them. It's just like having a cut on your hand. I wouldn't just stop and stare at someone who had a bad cut. I would help them."

THE PATH FAMILY OF AGENCIES

The PATH family of agencies works to end homelessness for individuals, families, and communities throughout Southern California. Next year, we will celebrate 30 years of transforming lives. In honor of this milestone, we are going to help 3,000 people make it home by the end of 2014.
